Home Battery Installation in Bolton

Certified, registered and independently checked

A home battery installation gives Bolton households a way to buy electricity when it's cheap and use it when it isn't. You don't need solar panels to make one pay: the battery charges overnight on an off-peak tariff and covers the expensive hours, which suits the way most households actually use power - a burst in the morning, a bigger one in the evening.

Renegade Solar is an MCS-certified installer based in North Manchester, and every Bolton battery job is surveyed, specified and commissioned by Ashley Merritt, a qualified electrician with over 20 years of experience. No salespeople, no call centre - the person who works out what size battery you need is the person who installs it.

What a battery does in a Bolton home

Off-peak electricity on tariffs like Octopus Go can cost about a third of the peak rate. The battery tops up overnight, then runs the house through the expensive hours. Add solar and it also stores what the roof makes at midday for the evening - useful on Bolton's terraced streets, where the roof was never going to hold a big array anyway.

We mainly fit Solax and AlphaESS systems, from 6kWh upwards, sized against your actual bills rather than a package price. Batteries go in garages, utility rooms or next to the driveway - never in lofts, which contradicts NAPIT safety guidance no matter how convenient it looks on the day. Domestic battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, whether or not solar is involved.

One honest limit: a battery keeps the circuits it's designed to keep running during a power cut, not the whole house by default. If backup matters to you, we design the essential-circuit side properly rather than promising the earth.

Retrofit batteries for existing solar

Bolton has plenty of roofs already carrying panels fitted by other firms. A retrofit battery adds storage to an existing solar installation, and the integration - inverter compatibility, export limits, tariff setup - is electrician's work, which is what we do. It's also the fix for the classic problem: panels generating surplus at midday while the household is out.

What our customers say

"When looking at Solar there are a lots of regional and national providers out there but so pleased I choose Renegade Solar for my project (16 panels, 2x9.6kwh batteries, 8kw inverter and an EV charger). Ash and the team are great. Really customer focused and work with you to find the best solution that works for you and your home. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and great to see local independent businesses able to get it so right."

Alex Skelt, Trustpilot

“From the start he was extremely friendly, knew what he was talking about and we agreed a price, he came did the job it took longer than he expected but he didn't complain he took his time to finish the job and came back next day to help set it up, I was thoroughly impressed”

Why use a local Bolton battery installer

You deal with Ashley from the first survey to commissioning and aftercare. The installation is done by our in-house team; only the scaffolding is ever subcontracted, and a battery-only job usually doesn't need any. We hold MCS certification (number NAP-66870), NAPIT registration and HIES consumer protection, and we're an Octopus Energy Trusted Partner.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation survey - we'll look at your bills, your consumer unit and where a battery could sensibly live, and put real numbers in front of you.

How it works

How a battery installation runs

Whether it is going in alongside solar or on its own.

  1. Free survey

We look at where the battery can safely go, the consumer unit, the incoming supply and any existing solar. Lofts are ruled out - that goes against NAPIT guidance.

    No charge, no obligation
  2. Sizing it to your usage

Capacity is chosen from how much electricity you actually get through and when, along with your tariff. Typical domestic systems are roughly 5kWh to 15kWh.

  3. Written proposal

The battery, the inverter, where each unit goes and what it will cost, with the assumptions behind any savings figure written down alongside it.

  4. Installation

Fitted by the in-house team, including any consumer unit work. If backup during a power cut is part of the design, the essential circuits are agreed before we start.

  5. Commissioning and certification

Tested and certified to the applicable BS 7671 requirements, with charge and discharge windows set up for your tariff.

  6. Handover and aftercare

We walk you through the monitoring app and the tariff settings, then stay on the end of the phone.

Common questions

The questions we get asked most

What size battery do I need?

Most domestic installations land somewhere between 5kWh and 15kWh, but the right answer comes from your own usage rather than a rule of thumb. We look at what you get through and when, what tariff you are on and whether solar is involved, then size it from there at survey.

Can a battery be added to solar panels I already own?

Yes, and it is routine work rather than an experiment. The inverter and the existing setup get checked for compatibility first, so the battery and the solar actually talk to each other instead of being bolted together. It also gets factored into the grid connection paperwork.

Where can a home battery actually be fitted?

Garages, utility rooms, driveways and other suitable spaces - we have installed in all of them. Lofts are ruled out, which follows NAPIT guidance on battery locations, so if the loft is the only spot we will say so at survey rather than fit it anyway.

Which battery brands do you install?

Batteries from manufacturers such as GivEnergy, Solax and AlphaESS, depending on what suits the property. Capacity, monitoring and how the unit handles an existing solar setup all come into it, and the recommendation comes out of the survey rather than out of a stockroom.

Will a home battery keep the lights on in a power cut?

Not automatically. Backup has to be designed into the installation, with equipment chosen for it and the essential circuits agreed before we start. A standard battery installation does nothing during an outage, so tell us at survey if backup matters to you.

Which electricity tariffs suit a home battery?

Time-of-use tariffs are where a battery earns its keep: it charges at the cheaper off-peak rate and runs the house through the expensive periods. We have written up how that runs day to day on our Octopus Go page at /octopus-go-battery-installer-manchester/.
