A home battery lets you store cheap electricity and use it when grid prices are higher. They work well even without solar panels, and pay for themselves through tariff arbitrage - buying overnight at off-peak rates and avoiding peak-rate electricity during the day.

How home batteries save you money

Off-peak electricity prices can be as little as one third the price of peak rates. Your battery automatically charges during the cheap periods (typically overnight) and powers your home when electricity is expensive. It works well with smart tariffs like Octopus Go, and saves you money year-round - including in winter when solar panels are less effective.

A qualified electrician comes out to look at your property's electrical setup and your energy usage patterns, and works out the right battery for the situation - you won't get a salesperson. This matters because we've seen other installers recommend batteries in unsuitable locations like lofts, which contradicts safety guidelines. When an electrician specs the job, you get honest advice about what'll actually work safely in your home.

2. Flexible Installation

Batteries can go in a range of locations - we've fitted them next to driveways, in garages, and other suitable spaces with minimal disruption.

Can I add a battery to existing solar?

Yes, this is something we do regularly. We've integrated batteries with existing solar installations many times, including alongside DMEGC solar panels and other quality brands, so the integration tends to go smoothly.

How a battery installation runs

Free survey

We look at where the battery can safely go, the consumer unit, the incoming supply and any existing solar. Lofts are ruled out - that goes against NAPIT guidance.
No charge, no obligation
Sizing it to your usage

Capacity is chosen from how much electricity you actually get through and when, along with your tariff. Typical domestic systems are roughly 5kWh to 15kWh.
Written proposal

The battery, the inverter, where each unit goes and what it will cost, with the assumptions behind any savings figure written down alongside it.
Installation

Fitted by the in-house team, including any consumer unit work. If backup during a power cut is part of the design, the essential circuits are agreed before we start.
Commissioning and certification

Tested and certified to the applicable BS 7671 requirements, with charge and discharge windows set up for your tariff.
Handover and aftercare

We walk you through the monitoring app and the tariff settings, then stay on the end of the phone.

Common questions

The questions we get asked most

Do solar panels actually work in Manchester?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so they keep producing on the grey days we get plenty of, and they often run more efficiently in cooler temperatures than in a heatwave. The annual generation projection we give you already accounts for local weather, your roof orientation and any shading.

How long does an installation take?

A standard residential solar panel installation is commonly completed in one to two days. That can stretch if scaffolding is complicated, the roof needs repair first, the consumer unit needs upgrading, the DNO has requirements, or the weather turns.

Do I need planning permission?

Many domestic solar installations are permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas, some flat roofs, ground-mounted arrays and unusual positions can need extra checks or consent. We will tell you where your property sits before you commit to anything.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. Standalone home battery installations make sense where the roof is shaded, unsuitable, not yours to alter, or you would rather not have panels on it. On a time-of-use tariff the battery charges at the cheaper off-peak rate and runs the house through the expensive periods.

Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?

Only if the system is specifically designed for it. Backup needs the right equipment and an essential-circuits design agreed up front, so it is something to raise at survey stage rather than assume. Not every battery installation gives you backup.

Who actually turns up to do the work?

Ashley and the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part of the installation we subcontract. The person who surveyed your property is the person overseeing the install and the person you ring afterwards.

My roof is a strange shape. Is that a problem?

Usually not. We have fitted arrays around rooflights, chimneys, dormers and roof lanterns, split installations across several flat roof sections, and put arrays on the ground where the roof was not the right answer. It is worth a survey before you write your property off.
