Are Solar Panels Worth It in Manchester?

The honest answer is that it depends on three things: your roof, how you use electricity, and what you do with the electricity you generate. Anyone who quotes you a flat percentage saving before seeing any of those is selling, not advising. Here's how we'd work it out for your property, and what the evidence from our own installations around Greater Manchester says.

Manchester weather is not the problem

Panels generate from daylight, not direct sunshine, and they often run more efficiently in cooler conditions than in a summer heatwave. Greater Manchester gets enough daylight for solar to work properly - the things that actually decide your output are the roof's orientation, the slope, and what's shading it. We model generation from the actual roof and local conditions as part of the survey, so the projection you get is for your property, not a national average with a Manchester postcode bolted on.

What decides whether it's worth it

Your roof. A clean south-facing roof with no obstructions is the easy case. Chimneys, dormers, rooflights and trees cut into what's usable, and the design has to work around them honestly. We've fitted arrays above three rooflights on one pitched roof and split a flat-roof system across several sections around a roof lantern, so awkward is workable - it just has to be designed properly rather than forced.

When you use electricity. Generation happens through the middle of the day. If someone's home and the washing machine's on, you're using your own electricity at its best price. If the house is empty all day, a battery changes the sums completely, because you store the afternoon and spend it in the evening instead of selling it cheap and buying back dear.

Your tariff. With a time-of-use tariff, the battery charges overnight at off-peak rates in winter when generation is low, and the house runs on cheap stored electricity through the day. One of our Prestwich customers put it plainly: through summer their bills are close to zero, and in winter they still save a serious amount by charging the battery overnight. Getting paid for what you don't use

Surplus generation can be exported for payment under the Smart Export Guarantee. Export rates vary by supplier, so we don't promise a figure - but because we're MCS-certified (NAP-66870), your installation qualifies, and we handle the documentation your supplier needs to set the payments up.

0% VAT, for now

Domestic solar panel and battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, when the rate is due to return to 5%. There's nothing to claim - the rate applies to the installation when one contractor supplies and fits it. What we won't tell you

We don't quote "save 70% on your bills" or "payback in five years guaranteed", because those numbers depend on the roof and the household, and nobody honest can know them in advance. What we do is model the system against your actual usage and tariff, show you the assumptions, and leave the decision with you. If the numbers don't work for your property, we'll say so - a system that doesn't pay for itself isn't a bargain at any price.

So, worth it?

For most Greater Manchester homes with a workable roof and sensible usage patterns, yes - especially with a battery and a time-of-use tariff in the mix, and with 0% VAT applying until March 2027.
