EICR Inspections in Trafford

MCS-certified solar panel and battery storage installation across North Manchester, designed and fitted by a qualified electrician rather than a salesperson.

EICR Electrical Safety Inspections in Trafford

We do EICR electrical safety inspections across Trafford at £150 plus VAT for any domestic property, with the certificate issued the same day. Ashley is a NAPIT-registered electrician (66870) and has around twenty years of experience.

Trafford properties

Trafford has a wide spread of property types and values, and the electrical installations reflect that range. Period houses through Hale, Bowdon and Sale make up a large portion of the southern part of the borough - many of these have been substantially renovated and extended over the years, and the electrical installation has grown with the property. The EICR inspection works out whether the consumer unit, earthing and bonding have all kept pace with the successive rounds of work, or whether some of it was done to an older standard that doesn't meet current requirements.

The northern part of the borough - Old Trafford, Stretford, parts of Urmston - has a different character, with more terraced housing and semis from the Victorian period through to the mid-20th century. These properties commonly have electrical systems that have been upgraded piece by piece, and the older terraces in particular tend to have consumer units and earthing arrangements that don't always reflect what's required now.

Modern apartments and newer developments across Urmston and beyond are generally more straightforward, though installation quality varies and the higher-value properties aren't immune to shoddy workmanship. An EICR on a new-build can still turn up issues that the original electrician should have caught.

Common electrical issues in Trafford

The period properties through Hale, Bowdon and Sale frequently turn up electrical installations where extensions and renovations have added circuits over the years without the consumer unit being upgraded to cope. Consumer units that don't meet current safety standards, inadequate circuits for modern loads, and earthing arrangements that need updating are all common findings on an EICR in the southern part of the borough. We also see properties where the visible installation - switches, sockets, even the consumer unit itself - looks relatively modern, but the wiring behind the walls is still on the original installation from decades ago.

The terraced housing in Old Trafford and Stretford has its own patterns. These properties commonly have electrical systems that have been extended in stages, and the consumer unit and earthing arrangements don't always reflect current requirements. Whether the installation has been properly maintained and updated over the years is what the EICR testing establishes.

For landlords

Landlord obligations in Trafford are clear: a current EICR for every let, renewed at least every five years and issued again at the start of each new tenancy. Fall foul of that and fines can reach £30,000, with the local authority also empowered to arrange remedial work and reclaim the cost from the landlord. Tenants in place get the report within 28 days and those moving in receive it before they do. Where C1, C2 or FI codes appear, the electrical faults behind them are due to be put right within 28 days. With Ashley's NAPIT registration, one electrician covers the EICR and any resulting remedial installation work.

For buyers

Get the EICR done before completion. With the values you see across Hale, Bowdon and the rest of the borough, £150 is nothing next to the cost of learning after moving day that the wiring or the consumer unit wants major work, and the EICR report hands you hard evidence to put to the seller, along with a clear picture of the electrical installation you're taking on. Property ages in Trafford stretch back more than a century, so installation quality swings a lot, and only proper electrical testing settles it.

What's included

The visit opens with a visual inspection of wiring, sockets, switches and the consumer unit, then calibrated instrument checks of continuity, earth fault loop impedance and insulation resistance, plus RCD operation. The certificates and full EICR report are issued that same day in plain English. Where remedial work comes out of the findings, we price it, schedule it and, as NAPIT-registered electrical installers, carry it out ourselves.

When we find issues

Any faults the EICR identifies get explained in full: what's behind them, why they matter, and what lifts the installation back to standard. You'll deal with an electrician who's covered Trafford for the best part of twenty years and quotes straight, with no pressure attached. Remedial installation work is normally arranged within a month of the inspection.

Ashley Merritt on site alongside a ground-mounted solar array
Who you get

You'll be dealing with Ashley

Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, an electrician with over 20 years on the tools and more than 10 of those on commercial projects. He does the survey himself, designs the system, oversees the install and picks up the phone afterwards.

That matters more than it sounds. When a salesperson specs a job you get whatever fits the sales sheet. We have been called out to batteries fitted in lofts, which goes against NAPIT guidance, and to quotes worked out from Google Earth that missed the flat roof that made the most sense for the house.

About Renegade Solar

Why us

A small Manchester outfit, not a sales operation

Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, a qualified electrician. Here is what that changes.

You deal with Ashley

Ashley Merritt runs Renegade Solar, does the survey himself and designs the system. There is no call centre and nobody works on commission.

An electrician designs it

Over 20 years on the tools, including more than 10 years on commercial work. The roof, the wiring, the consumer unit and the battery sizing are all one job, not four.

Our own team fits it

The installation is carried out by the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part we subcontract.

Awkward roofs welcome

Flat roofs, rooflights, dormers, chimneys, parapets, mixed roof sections and ground-mounted arrays. We design around what is actually up there.

How it works

How an inspection works

Testing, a written report, and a plain explanation of what is actually urgent.

  1. Book a slot

Tell us the property type, roughly how many circuits and consumer units there are, and whether you need it for a tenancy or a sale.

  2. Visual inspection

Consumer unit, earthing and bonding, accessible wiring, sockets, switches and any visible damage or unsafe alterations.

  3. Dead and live testing

Circuit by circuit: continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD operation.

  4. The report

Observations coded C1, C2, C3 or FI, with each one explained in plain English so you can tell what is dangerous from what is merely worth improving.

  5. Certificate

Issued to you in the form you need, including for landlord records.

  6. Remedial work, if you want it

Anything that needs doing is priced separately and you are free to take it elsewhere. There is no hard sell attached to the report.

“I just had solar and batteries installed, they were very helpful with the system design to maximise the panels on my roof and they were able to start quite soon. They worked quickly and it was completed to a high standard. Much cheaper than Octopus while providing more options.”

Solar, Battery and EV Charger Install

Solar, Battery and EV Charger Install. When looking at Solar there are a lots of regional and national providers out there but so pleased I choose Renegade Solar for my project (16 panels, 2x9.6kwh batteries, 8kw inverter and an EV charger). Ash and the team are great. Really customer focused and work with you to find the best solution that works for you and your home. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and great to see local independent businesses able to get it so right.

    Solar panel and battery install

Solar panel and battery install. Ashley fitted solar panels, battery, inverter, and EV charger at our house, as well as some assorted electrical jobs at the same time. Ashley came round to our house for an assessment beforehand and talked us through everything and what to expect beforehand, and once we had agreed everything, the install was arranged in about a month, taking a week to complete. Him and Connor were both really friendly to have around and even managed to get an extra panel on the roof than the initial design. We are very happy with the install and will be using them again next time we need anything electrical in the house looked at. Can't recommend them enough!

Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price

Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price. I contacted several solar fitters, wanting panels put on a flat garage roof rather than the pitched main roof. None were interested. Ashley was happy to look at the best solution and design at a price way less than a pitched roof fitting (no scaffolding needed). And he is an absolute pleasure to deal with. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

My go-to guy for everything solar and electric

My go-to guy for everything solar and electric. Over the last few years Ashley has massive upgraded the electrical setup in our house, with solar panels, two batteries, a car charger, new fuse board, new outdoor sockets, security lights, extractor fan.. I’m sure there’s more. Every job is tackled professionally and with a full and honest explanation of the work involved. On top of all of that, he’s a lovely dude who is a joy to be around. I can’t fault Ashley or any of the wonderful team at Renegade!

Common questions

The questions we get asked most

Do solar panels actually work in Manchester?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so they keep producing on the grey days we get plenty of, and they often run more efficiently in cooler temperatures than in a heatwave. The annual generation projection we give you already accounts for local weather, your roof orientation and any shading.

How long does an installation take?

A standard residential solar panel installation is commonly completed in one to two days. That can stretch if scaffolding is complicated, the roof needs repair first, the consumer unit needs upgrading, the DNO has requirements, or the weather turns.

Do I need planning permission?

Many domestic solar installations are permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas, some flat roofs, ground-mounted arrays and unusual positions can need extra checks or consent. We will tell you where your property sits before you commit to anything.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. Standalone home battery installations make sense where the roof is shaded, unsuitable, not yours to alter, or you would rather not have panels on it. On a time-of-use tariff the battery charges at the cheaper off-peak rate and runs the house through the expensive periods.

Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?

Only if the system is specifically designed for it. Backup needs the right equipment and an essential-circuits design agreed up front, so it is something to raise at survey stage rather than assume. Not every battery installation gives you backup.

Who actually turns up to do the work?

Ashley and the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part of the installation we subcontract. The person who surveyed your property is the person overseeing the install and the person you ring afterwards.

My roof is a strange shape. Is that a problem?

Usually not. We have fitted arrays around rooflights, chimneys, dormers and roof lanterns, split installations across several flat roof sections, and put arrays on the ground where the roof was not the right answer. It is worth a survey before you write your property off.
