Solar Panel Installer in Hale

MCS-certified solar panel and battery storage installation across North Manchester, designed and fitted by a qualified electrician rather than a salesperson.

We fit solar panel and battery installations across Hale. We're an MCS-certified installer based in North Manchester, and we're familiar with the area's substantial properties and conservation area considerations around South Hale.

Every installation is personally overseen by Ashley Merritt, a fully qualified electrician with over 20 years of experience. When you enquire with us, an electrician surveys your property and designs your system - we don't employ salespeople. The same in-house team installs everything, and your installer commissions the system before handover.

Hale properties and solar suitability

Hale's housing stock is predominantly larger detached properties with generous roof space, which gives a solar array room to work. Many homes here use more electricity than the Manchester average, which is exactly where solar and battery systems earn their keep on the bills.

Period properties are common throughout Hale, including Victorian and Edwardian homes with slate roofs. These often have good south-facing aspects and solid roof structures. We're experienced with these property types and can advise on what's realistic for your specific situation.

Parts of Hale fall within conservation areas, including South Hale and the area around Hale Station. This doesn't mean you can't have solar panels, but it does mean we need to consider visibility and may need to discuss planning with the local authority. We'll walk you through what's achievable on your specific property before anything is quoted, so there are no surprises later.

System sizing for larger properties

Hale properties typically suit larger systems than average. A 3-bed semi might take a 4kW system; many Hale homes are better served by 6-10kW or more (15-25 panels) to match their higher energy consumption. We size around your usage and roof rather than a headline panel count - the survey settles it: usage, roof orientation, shading, and what the roof will actually take, worked out on the property rather than off a package list.

We've recently completed a 110-panel commercial solar installation and we're quoting on a 600-panel one, so bigger domestic installations are well within our experience - three-phase supplies and larger inverters included.

Equipment we install

We're approved installers for AlphaESS batteries and inverters, whose UK office is in Dursley, Gloucestershire, and you'll find us on their find an installer page. Solax approval sits alongside that. An AlphaESS battery storage system is our usual pick for the larger installations Hale homes tend to need.

Panels come from manufacturers we trust, mainly DMEGC and Trina Vertex - both perform well on the slate roofs you see across Hale's Victorian and Edwardian streets. Happy to fit a brand you'd prefer; we've no exclusive deals holding us to a narrow range.

Panel warranties run 30 years and battery warranties 10 years on everything we install.

Why the installer matters

We've come across other installers' work that breaks NAPIT safety guidelines - loft-mounted batteries being the clearest example. Salespeople spec those jobs; qualified electricians wouldn't.

With us, whoever surveys your property knows the technical requirements inside out. On a period or conservation-area home there's enough to think about already without an unsafe design added to the list. We won't recommend anything unsafe or unsuitable to win a sale, we follow NAPIT guidelines properly, and every installation's electrical work stays in-house with our own qualified electricians - never subcontracted. And because we're MCS-certified, that work is certified to the BS 7671 requirements the scheme expects.

Battery storage and time-of-use tariffs

Plenty of Hale customers pair solar panels with battery storage. The battery charges from the panels during the day and from cheap overnight electricity on tariffs like Octopus Intelligent or Octopus Go, then covers the expensive morning and evening peaks.

Where a roof isn't the best home for panels - shading, orientation, or conservation area restrictions can all get in the way - our battery-only solutions work well with the same time-of-use tariffs.

We're an Octopus Energy Trusted Partner, vetted by Octopus for installation quality.

What our customers say

Hale homes tend to want the bigger installations, and this Checkatrade review describes one from the customer's side:

"From the start he was extremely friendly, knew what he was talking about and we agreed a price, he came did the job it took longer than he expected but he didn't complain he took his time to finish the job and came back next day to help set it up, I was thoroughly impressed"

Jeremy A, Checkatrade, M45

EPC ratings and property value

A solar panel installation lifts a property's EPC rating because the house generates some of its own electricity, and a stronger rating helps when the house is sold or let. In Hale's part of the market that's worth factoring in alongside the energy savings.

0% VAT on solar and battery

Solar panels and battery storage count as energy-saving materials, so domestic solar panel and battery installations currently attract 0% VAT - a rate set to run until March 2027. It makes a real dent in the overall cost, particularly on the bigger systems Hale properties tend to need. MCS certification sits alongside that rather than inside it: an MCS-certified installation is what qualifies a home for Smart Export Guarantee payments, and as MCS-certified installers that's the part of the paperwork we handle.

Nearby areas

We also cover Hale Barns, Altrincham, Bowdon, and surrounding areas.

Get started

We hold MCS certification (number NAP-66870), which is what qualifies your installation for Smart Export Guarantee payments. That MCS registration is the thing to check on any installer you're comparing us with. Alongside that, we're accredited by NAPIT, we work to the HIES Consumer Code, and Octopus Energy lists us as a Trusted Partner.

Who you get

You'll be dealing with Ashley

Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, an electrician with over 20 years on the tools and more than 10 of those on commercial projects. He does the survey himself, designs the system, oversees the install and picks up the phone afterwards.

That matters more than it sounds. When a salesperson specs a job you get whatever fits the sales sheet. We have been called out to batteries fitted in lofts, which goes against NAPIT guidance, and to quotes worked out from Google Earth that missed the flat roof that made the most sense for the house.

About Renegade Solar

Why us

A small Manchester outfit, not a sales operation

Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, a qualified electrician. Here is what that changes.

You deal with Ashley

Ashley Merritt runs Renegade Solar, does the survey himself and designs the system. There is no call centre and nobody works on commission.

An electrician designs it

Over 20 years on the tools, including more than 10 years on commercial work. The roof, the wiring, the consumer unit and the battery sizing are all one job, not four.

Our own team fits it

The installation is carried out by the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part we subcontract.

Awkward roofs welcome

Flat roofs, rooflights, dormers, chimneys, parapets, mixed roof sections and ground-mounted arrays. We design around what is actually up there.

How it works

What happens after you get in touch

The same order every time, and the same person through all of it.

  1. Free survey

A qualified electrician comes out and looks at the actual roof, the consumer unit, the cable route and how you use electricity. Not a salesperson with a script.

    No charge, no obligation
  2. System design

Panel layout, inverter and battery sizing, 3D modelling and generation projections worked out for your property and your tariff rather than a Google Earth guess.

  3. Written proposal

The equipment, the layout and the numbers in writing, with the payback calculation and the assumptions behind it so you can check the working.

  4. Installation

Fitted by the in-house team. A standard domestic install is commonly one to two days, subject to scaffolding, roof condition, consumer unit work and weather.

    Commonly 1 to 2 days
  5. Commissioning and certification

Tested and certified to the applicable BS 7671 requirements, with MCS-certified equipment and installation so the system is eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee.

  6. Handover and aftercare

We show you the monitoring, explain how to get the most out of the system, and cover two years of routine maintenance afterwards.

    Two years routine maintenance
“I just had solar and batteries installed, they were very helpful with the system design to maximise the panels on my roof and they were able to start quite soon. They worked quickly and it was completed to a high standard. Much cheaper than Octopus while providing more options.”

Solar, Battery and EV Charger Install

Solar, Battery and EV Charger Install. When looking at Solar there are a lots of regional and national providers out there but so pleased I choose Renegade Solar for my project (16 panels, 2x9.6kwh batteries, 8kw inverter and an EV charger). Ash and the team are great. Really customer focused and work with you to find the best solution that works for you and your home. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and great to see local independent businesses able to get it so right.

    Solar panel and battery install

Solar panel and battery install. Ashley fitted solar panels, battery, inverter, and EV charger at our house, as well as some assorted electrical jobs at the same time. Ashley came round to our house for an assessment beforehand and talked us through everything and what to expect beforehand, and once we had agreed everything, the install was arranged in about a month, taking a week to complete. Him and Connor were both really friendly to have around and even managed to get an extra panel on the roof than the initial design. We are very happy with the install and will be using them again next time we need anything electrical in the house looked at. Can't recommend them enough!

Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price

Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price. I contacted several solar fitters, wanting panels put on a flat garage roof rather than the pitched main roof. None were interested. Ashley was happy to look at the best solution and design at a price way less than a pitched roof fitting (no scaffolding needed). And he is an absolute pleasure to deal with. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

My go-to guy for everything solar and electric

My go-to guy for everything solar and electric. Over the last few years Ashley has massive upgraded the electrical setup in our house, with solar panels, two batteries, a car charger, new fuse board, new outdoor sockets, security lights, extractor fan.. I’m sure there’s more. Every job is tackled professionally and with a full and honest explanation of the work involved. On top of all of that, he’s a lovely dude who is a joy to be around. I can’t fault Ashley or any of the wonderful team at Renegade!

Common questions

The questions we get asked most

Do solar panels actually work in Manchester?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so they keep producing on the grey days we get plenty of, and they often run more efficiently in cooler temperatures than in a heatwave. The annual generation projection we give you already accounts for local weather, your roof orientation and any shading.

How long does an installation take?

A standard residential solar panel installation is commonly completed in one to two days. That can stretch if scaffolding is complicated, the roof needs repair first, the consumer unit needs upgrading, the DNO has requirements, or the weather turns.

Do I need planning permission?

Many domestic solar installations are permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas, some flat roofs, ground-mounted arrays and unusual positions can need extra checks or consent. We will tell you where your property sits before you commit to anything.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. Standalone home battery installations make sense where the roof is shaded, unsuitable, not yours to alter, or you would rather not have panels on it. On a time-of-use tariff the battery charges at the cheaper off-peak rate and runs the house through the expensive periods.

Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?

Only if the system is specifically designed for it. Backup needs the right equipment and an essential-circuits design agreed up front, so it is something to raise at survey stage rather than assume. Not every battery installation gives you backup.

Who actually turns up to do the work?

Ashley and the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part of the installation we subcontract. The person who surveyed your property is the person overseeing the install and the person you ring afterwards.

My roof is a strange shape. Is that a problem?

Usually not. We have fitted arrays around rooflights, chimneys, dormers and roof lanterns, split installations across several flat roof sections, and put arrays on the ground where the roof was not the right answer. It is worth a survey before you write your property off.
