Solar for owner-operated food businesses
Bakeries, cafes and restaurants tend to be owner-operated. The owner is in the kitchen at 4am or running service at lunchtime. There's usually no facilities team, no time for a sales presentation, and the last thing anyone wants is multiple contractors pointing at each other when something doesn't work.
That's why Ashley is a good fit for this kind of job. He's the person who quotes you, designs the system and installs it, so you've got one number to call and one person who knows your kit.
The bakery story you might have heard
We recently spoke to a Prestwich baker who was spending £10,000 a month on electricity and nearly went under because of it. That's the kind of bill a properly designed commercial solar installation can transform. Most commercial installs reduce monthly costs by 70-100%, with payback typically within 3-4 years and 20+ years of low-cost energy after that.
Why food businesses see strong returns
The financial case for solar on a bakery, cafe or restaurant is stronger than for a typical home because your demand and your generation line up. Bakeries are running ovens early in the morning. Cafes and restaurants are pulling power through lunch and dinner service. Refrigeration and cold storage run continuously, with peaks during the day. Solar panels generate from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so even in our northern climate they produce useful power across the working day.
Because you're using nearly every kilowatt-hour your panels produce as it's generated, you don't need battery storage to make the numbers work the way a domestic property does, which dramatically improves the return.
Who you'd be hiring
Ashley Merritt is the named director of Renegade Solar. He's been an electrician for 20+ years, ten of those on commercial projects, including electrical work on industrial sites such as the Jersey Recycling Centre. He's MCS-certified (NAP-66870) and an Octopus Energy Trusted Partner.
For a small food business, the practical implications are that Ashley assesses the kitchen, the supply and the roof himself rather than sending a salesperson. If the numbers don't work for your specific operation, he'll say so rather than oversell something that won't deliver. He's your direct contact from the first phone call through to commissioning and aftercare. The install gets coordinated around your trading hours, so you're not closing the doors on a service.
What a system might look like for your business
There's no one-size-fits-all answer, which is the point of doing the survey properly. Ashley will look at:
- Flat roofs, which give the flexibility to point panels south regardless of how the building sits
- Pitched roofs, which work well on factory units, larger commercial buildings and hospitality properties
- Ground-mounted systems, if you have spare land, grass verges or yard space
He'll often present multiple options. A recent design for a Bolton carpet warehouse, for example, included a 50-panel flat-roof option with three-year payback and a 115-panel option covering both flat and pitched roofs with four-year payback. The principle is the same for a bakery, just sized to match your kitchen's load.
What you need to qualify
The main requirement is that you own the building. Solar installations on leased food premises don't work because you need long-term ownership for the payback to be worth it. You'll also need sufficient roof space or land and ideally high electricity consumption, since the more you're spending now the faster the payback.
If you're a tenant in a leased unit, it may still be worth speaking to your landlord. Ashley can put together the financial case for them as the asset owner.
Aftercare
After commissioning, Ashley handles the grid connection, provides electrical certifications, and sets up Smart Export Guarantee arrangements so you earn income from any excess generation. Two years' routine maintenance is included, and he's the person who comes out if you ever need anything sorted.
