Shaw and Crompton
Shaw's a step up from central Oldham — slightly higher ground, a mix of traditional stone-built terraces and larger, newer properties. Average prices around £335k reflect an area where people are settled and willing to invest in their homes.
The older terraces around Shaw centre have solid roof structures, typically Yorkstone or concrete tile. These suit 3-4kW systems well. The larger properties towards Crompton and up towards Saddleworth have more roof space for 4-6kW+ systems, and their higher energy consumption means faster payback.
Tram and solar — a good combination
Shaw and Crompton has a Metrolink stop with park-and-ride. If you drive to the tram, pair solar with an EV charger and your commute gets dramatically cheaper. Charge overnight on a cheap tariff, drive to the stop, take the tram into Manchester. You come home to a charged car and barely notice the cost.
Battery storage suits Shaw
Shaw's larger properties and higher consumption levels make batteries a stronger proposition than in smaller terraced areas. More panels generate more surplus during the day, and a battery stores it for evenings when your bigger home is drawing more power. Combined with a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Go, the numbers work well here.
Higher ground, more wind?
Shaw sits higher than central Oldham. The altitude doesn't meaningfully affect solar output, but we do factor wind loading into every design — exposed properties need heavier-duty fixings, and we calculate this as standard. It's part of proper engineering, not an optional extra.

Solar installation
We were looking for an off grid solar installation for our allotment. Renegade gave us a very good quote for the job and so we chose them. This turned out to be a great decision. Ashley did a site inspection and we tweaked the initial design to better suit our location. The installation went ahead on the planned date and the work was completed to a very high standard. We had some additional work carried out at the same time, some due to Ashleys recommendation (e.g. swapping our lighting for LED). I highly recommend Renegade as a trustworthy and competent company.

Renegade Electricals - Exceptional service!
In a word...outstanding! Renegade Electricals installed a 10 panel PV system with battery/inverter for us and we're extremely happy with it. Ashley was easy to deal with, reassuring and very professional providing full documentation and keeping us informed throughout the process. His customer service was exceptional and technical knowledge formidable. The panels, even in winter in the grim/grey north west, are producing impressive stats and its great entertainment watching the Alpha-ESS app showing the panels filling the battery up during the day, then discharging in the evening.
