Solar for warehouse and distribution buildings

If you own a warehouse, distribution centre or retail unit in Greater Manchester, the chances are you're sitting on a flat roof that could be earning its keep instead of just keeping the rain off.

We're currently designing a system for a carpet and interior design warehouse in Bolton. The family own their building, bought it in the 1980s, and currently spend £700 a month on electricity. Ashley's 50-panel flat-roof design takes that bill to zero with a three-year payback. A larger 115-panel system covering both the flat roof and the pitched sections still pays back in four years.

After payback, both options deliver decades of free energy plus income from selling excess back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.

Who you'd be hiring

Ashley Merritt is the named director of Renegade Solar. He's been an electrician for 20+ years, ten of those on commercial projects, including electrical work on industrial sites such as the Jersey Recycling Centre. He's MCS-certified (NAP-66870) and an Octopus Energy Trusted Partner.

For a warehouse owner, the practical implication is that the person who walks the roof, the person who quotes the job and the person who runs the install are all the same person. Ashley personally surveyed the Bolton flat roof. Ashley designed both the 50-panel and 115-panel options. There's no salesperson handover, no key-account team and no install crew you've never met.

Why warehouses are ideal for commercial solar

Warehouses tick most of the boxes for a strong return:

Because warehouse and retail operations consume electricity during the day when solar generation is at its peak, you use nearly every kilowatt-hour your panels produce. That's why payback periods on commercial properties are typically 3-4 years, much faster than on a typical home where most consumption happens in the evening.

Why flat roofs work well

Flat roofs give the flexibility that pitched roofs don't. Panels can be mounted pointing south regardless of building orientation, which is why retail units, warehouses and commercial properties with large flat roofs generate substantial energy throughout the day. Many commercial buildings have flat roof spaces sitting unused that can be turned into assets producing savings for decades.

If you have pitched roof sections too, those can usually be incorporated into a combined design. The Bolton job is a good example, with options at multiple system sizes.

Ground-mounted and EV-charging additions

If your site has spare land, grass verges or yard space, ground-mounted solar can supplement rooftop generation or power EV charging points for staff and visitor vehicles. Ashley has installed ground-mounted systems connected to outdoor fuse boards for businesses wanting to offer free EV charging, powered entirely by solar with no recurring electricity cost.

That tends to land well as a staff benefit, as a visible environmental commitment for visitors and clients, and as a differentiator from competitors who don't offer it.

What you need to qualify

The main requirement is that you own the building. You'll also need sufficient roof space (south-facing pitched, flat of any orientation, or available ground space), high enough electricity consumption to give a good return (the more you spend, the faster the payback), and a plan to keep the property long-term so the payback is realised.

How Ashley handles the design

When you get in touch, Ashley assesses your property and reviews your electricity usage personally. He puts together detailed designs showing projected generation, cost savings and payback period based on your actual usage data. Most commercial clients get multiple design options - flat roof only, pitched roof only, or combined - with full financial analysis for each.

Installation is coordinated to minimise disruption to your operations. After commissioning, he handles the grid connection requirements, provides electrical certifications and sets up your Smart Export Guarantee arrangements.
